Quite possibly the most glamorous event on the planet, the Cannes Film Festival is the only thing you should be thinking about right now. Stunning dresses, impossible heels and snazzy suits are hitting the red carpet for the 70th edition of the festival, which will take place from the 17th-28th May this year. There will be laughter, there will be tears and there will be a whole load of movies for you to add to your watch list. So, what do you need to know about this year’s 11-day event? Let’s take a look...
Who is on the panel of judges - "Le Jury"?
The judging panel this year is jam-packed with huge names. Will Smith and Jessica Chastain are among the best known along with Fan Bingbing, Agnès Jaoui, Paolo Sorrentino, Park Chan-Wook, Maren Ade and Gabriel Yared. This year’s jury will be headed by world famous Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar, responsible for masterpieces such as Talk to Her and Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown.

Which film opened the festival?
This year the opening film was Ismael’s Ghosts, a French flick featuring the sensational Marion Cotillard. The film has had some interesting reviews so far but we will let you make up your own mind.
What’s causing the biggest buzz ? The Netflix Controversy
This year Cannes is really turning its attention towards the small screen. This is in part due to the return of the iconic TV series Twin Peaks. After 26 years of silence, the show will be premiering at the festival. There will also be, rather controversially, two Netflix films in the running for the Palme d’Or prize.
Problem is that the French people want the films to be shown in movie theatres to keep Cannes traditions while Netflix wants to keep it on the internet website online. The rules of Cannes Film Festival have already been changed as of next year: any movie who wants to compete will have to commit in being distributed in French movies theatres.
What’s going on with Nicole Kidman?
You might have seen this name mentioned a lot in conjunction with this year’s Cannes Film Festival. That is because Nicole Kidman has four different projects, for both TV and film, being screened at the event. The Beguiled, one of her film projects, is being hailed as one of the most anticipated screenings of the festival. Keep your eye out for this Aussie actress during the festivities.

The Palme d’Or is going to be hard to get.
This year there are 19 films competing for this highly coveted award so competition is going to be tough. We have already heard of a couple of favourites on the Cannes grapevine. These include Wonderstruck by Todd Haynes; Okja, starring Tilda Swinton; and Good Time, a bank robbing thriller. It’s going to be a fierce fight to the top, so don’t miss a single second of it.
And, of course, where are the parties?!
The Cannes Film Festival after parties are some of the most fabulous events of the year and 2017 is certainly not going to be an exception. Cara Delevigne and Rihanna will be among the famous faces that will be partying the night away along the French Riviera. If you happen to be in Cannes during the festival, keep your eyes peeled for celebrities – they will be everywhere!
