A new thrilling glass floor at the first level of the Iron Lady

Since yesterday (Monday October 6th), the Eiffel Tower – Paris’ most visited tourist site – unveiled its renovated First Floor allowing visitors to look down through a solid glass floor.

To increase the frisson of walking on air still further, the glass safety barriers have been inclined outwards. Previously the first floor was the least visited part of the tower and this new floor should attract more people.

A Huge Work on the Eiffel Tower

The €30-million ($37.5-million) refit - which took two years - includes shops, restaurants and a museum.

The city of Paris, charged architects Moatti-Riviere with creating a space that would show off Gustave Eiffel's impressive ironwork and make it fully accessible for disabled visitors.

The new buildings will also produce part of their own energy using windmills and solar panels, and the toilets will be run partly on rainwater.

The Eiffel Tower : most visited site in Paris

The "Iron Lady" attracts around seven million visitors a year, of which 85% are foreign travelers. If we look at nationalities, most visitors come from France (12,5%) followed by Americans (8,5%), Britons (7%), Italians (6,7%) and Germans (6%).

The Painting of the Eiffel Tower - a never ending job

The renovation of the first floor may be now complete but work on the whole tower built for the World's Fair of 1889 never ends. The structure has to be repainted every seven years, a job that requires 60 tons of paint.

In 2013 I had 2 big reasons to plan a trip to France: a new grand baby boy in Avignon, and I wanted to surprise my husband with a trip to Normandy. He absolutely loves anything and everything he can find to read or watch that is related to WWII. So, I started exploring online for a custom tour designer that could put together a great itinerary for …

Emilie deserves every 5 (actually I give her 10!) star review since we never dreamed our 2 week trip through the Loire, Normandy and Paris could be so perfect. One of the many steps above and beyond was arranging a full-day private tour in Normandy since my husband's uncle (who is still alive) was there on D-Day. Our guide, Noémie, knew in advance …

We are independent travelers, and usually I do extensive research on Tripadvisor and other websites, and plan our own itinerary. I started doing this for our France section of our trip, and came across Emilie's France Just for You website. End of research ! After an initial inquiry, Emilie totally customised our Normandy and the Loire Valley trip …

It's hard to know where to begin. We stumbled across France Just For You by accident when researching ideas for our three week visit to France. We made contact with Emily by email and began a conversation over the coming weeks as she planned a self-guided holiday for us, designed to fulfil our dream of staying in French b'n'bs in wine-growing …

Emilie and Guillaume: I want to send you this special thank you for making this trip truly spectacular! Our time in France was memorable precisely because of the people we've met, and the unique experiences we've had. We owe that all to you. There's no way that we ever would have been able to find the bed and breakfasts that you booked for us. And …

We have traveled in Europe a dozen times. Our trip to France, the Loire Valley and Normandy was one of the very best. Their custom self-guided tours are based on places and activities that interest you. Emelie listened to what we wanted and created an itinerary that was just what we wanted as well as some suggestions for other things we might try …
