  • You need a payment card with a chip to pay and withdraw money in France. We even advise to have 2 payment cards with chips, just in case one doesn't work occasionally.
  • Visa and MasterCard are accepted in all places where you can pay by credit cards. American Express is not as common as in the US. You should always ask before considering using it.
  • Some paying machines - such as tolls on the highways - have sometimes troubles to process foreign credit cards, so it's better to always carry some cash with you (maybe about 100 to 200€).

The French currency is the Euro (€). You cannot buy anything in France with another currency.

We recommend to withdraw Euros in French ATMs with your credit cards.

French people are not used to carry a lot of cash, please be careful if you have some.

  • It is highly recommended to call your bank about 2 weeks before your trip to let them know which countries you will travel to and the dates, so they won't block your card the first time you use it abroad. With some banks, you can do that online too.
  • Get a card with a chip at your bank before traveling. French credit cards all have a chip.
  • It is highly recommended to carry at least 2 credit cards, if possible from 2 different banks - in case one of your cards gets temporary blocks for any reason, you have back up.
  • Ask your bank if they have an agreement with a French bank for cheaper transaction fees. It is often the case with the biggest banks.
  • Have a contact to your bank handy while traveling, in case you need to reach them.

If you carry a Visa or MasterCard, any French ATM should work.

Your bank might have some rate agreements with international French banks. To save money on commissions, you should get this type of information before departure at your bank.

  • You can pay any amount in cash. Try not to get bills over 50€ as they might be rejected in some shops.
  • In small shops, make sure that credit cards are allowed. For amounts below 15€, it will be appreciated that you pay with cash.

We had an amazing experience visiting Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne in June 2018. We were a group of eight wine freaks and Emile & Laura organized an amazing itinerary with awesome attention to details. We definitely recommend FJFY!!
